Twitter (and other social networking sites) have played an important role in recent events in the Middle East.
R-Shief Twitter Analysis is a research tool in development that allows people to analyze how Twitter operates in and about the current Middle East.
Since August 2010, R-Shief has been data mining in real time
(pulling from Twitter and storing onto our own server every 10 minutes) tweets by selected
hashtags.
(A hashtag is Twitter nomenclature for 'subject heading').
RIM is storing the following hashtags:
#Gaza, #Syria, #Libya, #Japan, #Bahrain, #Arabfeminism, #Jan25, #Mother, #Mothersday, #21march, #March21, #Saudi, #Yemen, #Egypt, #Tunisia, #Khaledsaid, #Abdelumam and #Poland. This simple, craigslist-like interface is meant to encourage users to filter searches through these hashtags by language and/or range of dates.
Future versions of this data will appear in visual movie clips, installations, and other research environments.
